About me

I am co-founder and CEO of Youdao, a NetEase Group company. Youdao is a leader in Chinese education technologies, offering live courses, MOOC courses, smart devices (on Amazon too), and mobile apps. Youdao is a NYSE-listed company.

I live in Beijing. I received my bachelor and master's degree in computer science from Tsinghua University, and Ph.D. from Univeristy of California, Berkeley.

Work Experience

Since co-founding Youdao and leading it to a listed technology company with over 5000 employees, my work style has always been to combine executive leadership and deep technical and product understanding. Through deep grasp of users and technology, I endeavor to create innovative products, or break-through technologies.

Here are some projects I worked on over the years,

• Youdao Dictionary Pen: Youdao Dictionary Pen is the world's first translation pen that employs neural machine translation (NMT) and neural optical character recognition (OCR). As a language-learning-oriented AIoT device, it has become a blockbuster consumer product in Chinese learning smart device market. Since 2018, Youdao has sold millions of dictionary pens (as of early 2022).
• Youdao Neural Machine Translation: The YNMT project started in 2015 and launched as a production service in 2017. YNMT is an attention-based high-performance production neural machine translation engine. It supported Chinese and English at launch and has since expanded to more languages. Compared with Youdao's earlier statistical machine translation technology, YNMT achieved much higher quality and high performance through GPU inference. Later YNMT was upgraded to employ transformer technology. Now YNMT is one of the world's most popular translation services (for China and rest of the world), serving hundred of millions of requests every day.
• Youdao Courses: Since 2016, Youdao has been providing live online after-school tutoring courses for Chinese learners. Youdao Courses was later upgraded to use the Dual-Teacher Live Course model. Youdao Courses is one of the top online AST providers in China. Course enrollments reached close to 500 thousand just for the summer of 2020.

• NeoApple2: Port of Stephen A. Edwards's Apple2fpga to Xilinx Zynq platform. It emulates an Apple II computer on an FPGA board.
